Edit the DNS or IP Address Settings of the VCSA

The DNS setting is essential for the vCenter Server Appliance deployment. If you omit its configuration, you will fail the installation. Every production environment must have a DNS service running in the infrastructure, and are those DNS setting the ones you use for your deployment. But, there is a chance that you have a test environment or home lab, and you used a temporary DNS solution (Like Google DNS) when you first installed the VCSA, or you just need to upgrade to a new the DNS service, then, you need to edit the DNS settings.

“After you deploy the vCenter Server Appliance, you can edit the DNS settings and specify which DNS server to use. You can edit the IP address settings of the vCenter Server Appliance.”

You can edit these settings by using the VMware Appliance Management or The Direct Console User Interface (DCUI).

Option 1: vSphere Web Client.

1. Access to VMware Appliance Management: https://IP_or_FQDN:5480. If you don’t remember the root password, follow this blog post.

2. Go to Networking and click Edit under Network Settings.

3. Expand Hostname and DNS
4. Select between automatic or manual DNS setting and edit your new DNS.
5. Click Save,

Option 2: Direct Console User Interface

1. Access the VCSA using the Remote (or Web) Console.
2. Hit F2. Input password.

3. Got to Configure Management Network / DNS Configuration
4. Input Primary and Alternate DSN Server. Hit Enter, Esc and saves changes.
