Problem
More than a troubleshooting topic, this is a complaint about the VMware Tools and an issue a keep having from recent vSphere versions. Of course, this could be me doing something wrong, but so far don’t know what the root cause is.
I am running some tests with VMware Horizon (as usual), and during the pool provisioning, the following error is presented:
“Customization of the guest operating system ‘Windows9_64Guest’ is not supported in this configuration. Microsoft Vista (TM) and Linux guests with Logical Volume Manager are supported only for recent ESX host and VMware Tools versions. Refer to vCenter documentation for supported configurations.”
So, the key to take about this error is the “...VMware Tools versions.” part.
Solution
Checking the VM Summary tab, I see that the VMware Tools warning is there.
“VMware Tools is not installed on this virtual machine.”
Immediately I knew where the problem was. Yep, my fault not checking on this before (it was a quick test), but I was sure I had installed the VMware Tools.
After repairing VMware Tools, the VM (pool) could be provisioned.
This is a known issue of Horizon View when deploying from a template. Additional to this solution, make sure that your template is using the latest version of the VMware Tools and is running latest Windows updates.
As I mentioned, I was sure I had installed VMware Tools. Also, I used the VMXNET 3 network adapter, which requires the VMware Tools installation to work. The installation was completed, and the VM was rebooted. So, why (sometimes) do VMware Tools keep missing the proper installation on the first try? Why do I need to keep repairing its installation? I don’t know, and it is something I would like to figure out.
